Hyundai is producing plenty of eye-catching vehicles these days that are as cool as they are compelling, and the fourth-generation Tucson SUV is the most recent model to hit dealerships. While a plug-in hybrid variant will join the lineup later this year, it’s currently offered with a standard 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder or an optional 226-hp hybrid powertrain.

We drove a top-of-the-line Limited trim level with the 2.5-liter base engine, $1500 all-wheel-drive system, and $400 Calypso Red paint, which made for an as-tested price of $37,890.

The Tucson has transformed from one of the most generic-looking compact crossovers to one of the wildest looking, with a unique illuminated grille and side surfacing.

The Tucson Limited is loaded with desirable standard features such as stylish 19-inch wheels, leather-trimmed seats, a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and central touchscreen, and a suite of driver-assistance technology.

A larger footprint is one of the biggest differences between the outgoing Tucson and the new one, which is 6.1 inches longer than before with an additional 3.4 inches between its axles.

The Tucson’s longer length contributes to a positively cavernous back seat and huge cargo area, both of which are bigger than rivals such as the Honda CR-V and VW Tiguan.

The Tucson comes standard with front-wheel drive and a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available as an option.

Despite the Tucson’s extroverted exterior and classy cabin, it suffers from disappointing acceleration times, including an unremarkable 8.8-second trip to 60 mph.

Even though the Tucson is rather slow with the base engine, it has a refined ride quality and steady handling that’s supplemented by the SUV’s satisfying steering feel and terrific interior isolation.

While the Tucson’s top trim has the nicest interior materials and fanciest features, its climate control and infotainment systems rely too heavily on touch-sensitive controls. We prefer the conventional physical switchgear found on the lesser SE and SEL trims.
