Brian May’s wife Anita Dobson has revealed the difficulty in switching to the role of a carer after the Queen icon suffered a series of medical emergencies in lockdown.

Brian, 74, suffered a heart attack, a grim injury of his backside while gardening and also battled sciatica over the past couple years, with former soap star Anita, who transformed into his aide overnight, recalling her fears of what their future may look like if his health woes continued.

She said: ‘My husband had a heart attack, sciatica and a haemorrhage, and I suddenly went from being a working actress to being a cleaner, cook and carer.

‘Not a role I’m easily castable for! I did the best I could and thank God he’s all right now.

‘He’s very kind. He says, “It’s down to Anita that I got through it”. But what you would have seen behind the scenes was a menial who was so grumpy it just wasn’t true.

‘I’d go off into a corner and mutter away to myself, the cat, the fish and the birds in the trees – anybody who would listen.’

EastEnders icon Anita, 72 – who married Brian in 2000 – added to Woman’s Weekly: ‘Lockdown was dreadful, a nightmare that I wish never to go back into.

‘Even when Brian started to get better there was this awful feeling of is this my life now?’

The musician has not shied away from detailing his recoveries, previously hailing Anita for ‘saving his life’ after he recovered from his heart attack.

Brian revealed last year that doctors had also treated him for multiple complications, including a stomach haemorrhage, and inserted three stents, as his ‘small’ heart attack brought other underlying health issues to the surface.

Speaking to The Guardian in 2020, he revealed he was ‘very near death,’ as the drugs he was on afterwards caused complications.

He later opened up about his heart attack, saying he had to ‘fight’ his way back to good health, admitting he didn’t see the heart attack coming, and it took him a while to get back to his old self.

‘What also happened was I got very sick. I got a heart attack for no reason I can possibly see. I didn’t really tick any of the boxes for heart attacks but I got it,’ he told the PA news agency.

‘That knocks you back, I have to say. It knocks the stuffing out of you. I had a lot of other complications.’
