Danny DeVito began a flurry of fan activity outside celebrity favourite Nobu in Malibu, California on Saturday.

The iconic actor, who achieved fame with 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next and has enjoyed a stellar career including TV series Taxi, Twins opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Batman Returns, is also fondly remembered by many as the brainpower behind the 1996 film adaptation of Matilda, in which he played the dastardly Mr Wormwood.

Taking all of this into consideration, it’s hardly surprising that he was approached by an enthusiastic group of fans outside the restaurant.

The all-female group, which seemed delighted to have spotted him, gathered around Danny, laughing and smiling.

For his part, the 76-year-old looked only too happy to chat with the ladies.

Clad in black trousers, a purple shirt and a purple and green jacket, the Hollywood star also posed with a fan, who put her arm around his shoulder and was spotted grinning widely into the lens of a camera.

Japanese restaurant Nobu has long been a popular haunt of celebrities, and boasts branches around the world, but it’s possibly been a while since such a gleeful fan encounter.

Danny, who recently had fans outraged on the ‘national treaure’s’ behalf after briefly losing his blue verified tick on Twitter, has continued to attract admirers with his current role as Frank Reynolds on the long-running sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, opposite Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day.

The actor, who separated from his wife and Matilda co-star Rhea Pearlman in 2017, has been announced as part of the cast for retirement thriller Sniff.

Alongside Dame Helen Mirren, Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman, the movie is set to reimagine the film noir genre and sees Danny and Morgan as a pair of unlikely detective partners investigating two mysterious deaths that send shockwaves through a luxury retirement community.

It will be directed by Dame Helen’s husband, Taylor Hackford.

Season 15 shooting for It’s Always Sunny also sparked excitement in August by bringing the party to Dublin and putting out a call for a Danny double, who was required to stand around 4ft 5 with a 41-inch waist.

The actor himself is believed to stand around 4ft 10.
