New details have surfaced about the murder of Pop Smoke.
The star died at just 20 years old after being fatally shot during a home invasion robbery in 2020, and now the LAPD is speaking out with additional information.
Find out what they said…
LAPD Det. Carlos Camacho testified Friday (May 7) that a 15-year-old shooter killed Pop Smoke, via New York Daily News.
According to testimony, the teen was part of a group of intruders that wanted to steal Pop Smoke‘s Rolex. They broke into his rented mansion in Hollywood on February 19, 2020, and tried to take his Cuban link chain as well, but only got the diamond-studded watch, which they resold for $2,000.
The alleged shooter is now facing murder and robbery charges in the case, and also reportedly confessing to shooting Pop Smoke during a recorded interview with a cellmate at a juvenile detention center last year.
“He admitted that he shot the victim three times with a Baretta 9 [mm.],” the detective said, adding that he “admitted that they asked for the jewelry” and then had “a confrontation” with the superstar.
“They got into a fight, and he shot him three times. He said he shot him on the back.”
20-year-old Corey Walker, the only adult defendant in the group of 4, also reportedly confessed to his role during a separate secretly-recorded interview with a different informant in his cell.
“He said that when the individuals got inside, the suspects confronted [Pop Smoke], who was in the shower naked,” the detective said.
Corey said they demanded the jewelry and even said “Thank you” when it seemed he was complying, but Pop Smoke fought back and “rushed” the teenage group, who “pistol whipped” him before the 15-year-old fatally shot him.
Corey Walker’s defense lawyer Christopher Darden made a motion to have the murder charge dismissed, claiming that he never entered the house and told the younger defendants not to shoot anyone. The judge denied the request and ruled there was “sufficient cause” to send Corey to trial.
If convicted, Corey Walker potentially faces the death penalty.
More details also surfaced last year about Pop Smoke and the police.
