Normal People’s Sarah Greene welcomed her first child in lockdown.

The 36-year-old confirmed that she and her partner welcomed a baby boy, and that the family have had ‘bonding time’ over the past few months.

Speaking to iNews, Sarah said: ‘The last year has been life-changing in the best possible way, although we haven’t seen my family for months.

‘We’ve had lovely bonding time, the three of us getting to know each other, but I can’t wait to show [our son] off a bit now.’

Sarah had been set to start filming the new comedy Frank of Ireland in March 2020, around the same time Normal People was due to air, but production was shut down due to Covid-19.

When she returned in September to play Aine opposite Brian and Domhnall Gleeson, the actress was five months pregnant.

She said: ‘That last week was a bit of a blur – I remember waddling off set at the end of one day and Domhnall going, “Oh my God, you are SO pregnant…”

‘The costume girls did an amazing job of widening all the dresses, because I was huge. I was just relieved we got to finish it, to be honest.’

While Sarah has not spoken much about her partner publicly, he is a Northern Irish musician, and they share a home in Belfast.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph in 2019, Sarah – who previously dated Poldark’s Aidan Turner – said that she and her partner had discussed starting a family.

She said: ‘I think my biological clock ticking is more worrying than getting the right roles.

‘My boyfriend and I were talking about where we’d bring up [any future] kids. He’s from Northern Ireland, so he really wants us based there, whereas I’d rather Dublin. It’s such a tight-knit acting community in Dublin. Everyone knows everyone because we’ve all worked in theatre.’

Cork-born Sarah has starred in TV shows including Dublin Murders and Penny Dreadful and films including The Guard and Rosie, while she acted opposite Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple of Inishmaan on Broadway.

However, she came to further attention last year when she played Lorraine, the mother of Connell (played by Paul Mescal) in the hit series Normal People.

While Sarah is 11 years older than her on-screen son, she soon realised that the ages of Lorraine and Connell meant that she wasn’t being over-aged for the part.

She said: ‘I thought, “I’m too young to play Lorraine”. Then I realised Lorraine is 35 too. She just had Connell at 15, so I am the right age.’
