Susanna Reid and Charlene White are among those paying tribute to MP Sir David Amess following his death after he was stabbed at a constituency surgery.

Sir David, Tory MP for Southend West, was attacked at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh.

Essex Police have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid shared a tribute, writing on Twitter: ‘That poor man and his family. Awful, terrible. Utterly shocking. Love and support to the family of Sir David Amess.’

Andrew Neil wrote: ‘Terrible news. David Amess MP has died of his stab wounds. RIP.’

Loose Women star Charlene White added: ‘Just awful awful news. I’ve met MP David Amess many times over the years, and he was always lovely and kind.

‘He was hugely passionate about representing the needs of his constituents, and he loved his work. My thoughts are with his wife and children. This is so utterly tragic.’

Reverend Richard Coles also paid tribute, saying: ‘David Amess has died. RIP. Condolences and the assurance of prayers for all who mourn his death.’

The attacker ran into the church at around 12pm and knifed the politician while he was holding an open meeting, according to witnesses.

Armed police swarmed the scene as Sir David, 69, received treatment for his injuries. An air ambulance was also sent, but sadly he could not be saved.

Sir David, a married father-of-five, has been remembered as a passionate animal welfare campaigner.

He also campaigned for years for Southend to become a city – mentioning it virtually every week in Parliament.
