Mixing wood filler is messy. Set up a disposable surface such as a piece of cardboard. Dump out some sanding dust on it.

Pour a little wood glue into the center of the mound. Go sparingly here; too much glue will make a gooey mess.

Use a clean putty knife to mix the sanding dust and wood glue into a smooth, but slightly-granular consistency.

The filer consistency should be such that you can roll it between your thumb and forefinger, forming a small rod.
