Former footballer Kieron Dyer says he felt like he was “drowning” when he collapsed after a cracked rib punctured his lung while filming Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

The sports star, 42, became the latest star to pull out of the Channel 4 series on tonight’s episode due to injury after cracking a rib while wrestling.

“I started screaming with the pain,” he says. “My body shut down, my body was just breaking down and that was the end for me.

“I got taken to hospital and my broken rib had punctured my lung and it had collapsed.

“I just couldn’t breathe and then that’s when I keeled over.”

Initially, Kieron, who manages Ipswich Town’s Under 23s, had continued on the course regardless of his cracked rib just taking painkillers.

But during an overnight challenge, he struggled to breathe and was hospitalised where the puncture was discovered.

He withdrew from the show on the advice of medics.

“I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve been that breathless before,” he says. “You’re just gasping for air. It’s like you’re being strangled, or you’re drowning.

“At the time the medic thought maybe I was having a panic attack. But the pain I was in when they were lifting me up, he knew it was more than that.

“It was horrible.”

Former QPR player Kieron says he was disappointed to not complete the course.

“Every time I’d spoke to the DS, they told me I was one of the strongest contestants,” he says. “Early on I got the start or hyperthermia, the doctor appraised me, got me straight in by the fire, gets us wrapped up.

“I can remember I’m cramping up, and Ant then comes in and goes, ‘The reason why you’re like this, is because you’re the only one who gives 110%.’ I don’t know if that’s a complement or me being stupid, or what! So I was gutted to have to leave.”

Kieron had spent six weeks training in a weighted vest prior to filming. He says: “I felt really fit, I was getting strong in the gym, which really helped me.”
