William Roache has reportedly landed a six-figure contract to continue playing Ken Barlow on Coronation Street.

The actor, 89, has been a part of the ITV soap opera since its inception and is reported to have secured the deal ahead of his 90th birthday.

Bill Roache is due to reach the end of his current contract with the soap later this year but is still a fixture of Weatherfield storylines.

A source told the Daily Star: “Bill is a huge part of Coronation Street and they know how much the fans adore him.

“They love the idea of marking his 90th birthday with a great storyline.

“Bill may be pushing 90 but he still has the energy, passion and talent that make him soap’s greatest-ever actor.”

The Mirror has reached out to ITV for comment on this story.

Bill was forced to take a break from playing Street favourite Ken Barlow earlier this year after testing positive for Covid-19.

He remains in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest-serving television star in a continuous role.

Roache made his debut as Ken Barlow in the opening episode of Coronation Street, which aired in 1960.

The show celebrated its 60th anniversary last year amid the Covid-19 pandemic with Ken Barlow playing a major role in the storylines.

Over the years, Ken has been noted to have a chaotic love life, including through his marriages to Valerie Tatlock, Janet Reid and, most notably, to Deidre Langton.

His most recent romance was with the glamorous hairdresser Claudia Colby (Rula Lenska) but he has since focused on his remaining family on the street.

What does the future hold for Ken Barlow?

The Barlow family on the street currently consists of his sons Peter Barlow and Daniel Osbourne, adoptive daughter Tracy Barlow, adoptive granddaughter Amy Barlow, and grandsons Adam Barlow, Simon Barlow and Bertie Osbourne.

Ken previously had a daughter, Susan Barlow, who was killed-off in 2001, whilst also having a son Lawrence Cunningham and grandson James Cunningham, who were played by Roache’s real-life sons Linus Roache and James Roache.
