Dominic Cummings advises Nate Diaz on UFC contract and Conor McGregor trilogy

UFC star Nate Diaz has been advised by Boris Johnson’s former chief advisor to not re-sign with UFC once his contract expires and seek opportunities elsewhere

Dominic Cummings, the former chief adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has advised UFC star Nate Diaz not to sign a new contract with the promotion.

Mr. Cummings made headlines during the first Covid-19 UK lockdown when he made a 260-mile trip to Durham while experiencing symptoms of the virus.

The Prime Minister would fire his chief advisor with immediate effect just six months later.

Mr. Cummings published a 7000-word essay in May criticising Johnson’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and released texts from Mr Johnson which labelled disgraced health secretary Matt Hancock as “totally f******” hopeless“.

And he has now revealed a hitherto hidden interest in mixed martial arts.

Replying to a tweet about Diaz’s plans to fight again, Cummings wrote: “Do not sign new UFC contract, you will make more cash outside AND Dana White will come do a deal at some point for trilogy Conor McGregor fight.

“But outside you’ll have much more leverage & make more $. Look how they screwed Georges St-Pierre, now waiting for contract to expire.”

Mr. Cummings was referring to St-Pierre being denied the chance to box Oscar De La Hoya in September, as UFC president Dana White refused to release the Canadian from his contract.

Diaz was linked to a fight against internet star Jake Paul last month, but the 24-year-old is likely to fight Tommy Fury in his fifth professional fight.

Surging UFC welterweight Vicente Luque and Diaz both recently agreed to fight, but negotiations have seemingly come to a halt.

Popular MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz – who manages Luque – thinks the UFC is reluctant to make the fight as Diaz has one fight left on his current deal.

With the promotion gunning for Diaz to eventually fight UFC star McGregor in a trilogy, fears Diaz might not re-sign with the UFC could scupper those plans.

Abdelaziz told MMA Fighting: “I believe Nate Diaz has one fight left on his contract. I like the fight. I think it’s a great fight. I think the UFC, it’s a business, they want to make money and I think Nate and Conor [McGregor] will make them so much money.

“I think the only way the UFC will agree to make this fight happen [is] if Nate re-signs with the UFC. But I don’t know if this is good for Nate to re-sign with the UFC.

“I understand the business. I understand the UFC’s point but they know we want the fight, Nate wants the fight but at the end of the day, they hold the contract.

“I can push as much as I can but I don’t know what they want to do. Vicente, 100 percent will fight Nate or Nick [Diaz].”
