Emmerdale is lining up some very dramatic scenes next week, with at least one character set to be killed off
Emmerdale director Duncan Foster has teased scary yet “frustrating” scenes ahead, as stunt week leaves lives on the line – and leads to the death of at least one character.
Viewers could be “misled” too, as the different events collide and lead to many twists and turns – meaning viewers might not predict where the scenes are headed.
A series of stunts will leave lives in peril, as village favourites are left fighting for their lives during the survival challenge.
Some of those caught up in the scenes include Victoria Sugden, David Metcalfe, Priya Sharma, Charles Anderson, Andrea Tate and Manpreet Sharma.
Meena Jutla’s thirst for revenge against David and Victoria leads to carnage, with four different stunts confirmed – and more details yet to be revealed.
Speaking ahead of the stunts playing out on screen, including two top-secret twists being kept under wraps until they air, Duncan shared his hopes to “mislead” fans with the many twists and turns.
He said of what viewers can expect: “To be scared, to be shocked, to hopefully be misled at various moments. It may leave you with a sense of frustration but it’s going to be brilliant.”
Duncan also teased what it was like to film the dramatic episodes, and what inspired him.
He explained: “We’ve had some absolutely amazing moments and I think it’s going to look great when we put it all together. I suppose I did look at a couple of the big Hollywood films.
“The River Wild with Meryl Streep was an inspiration for the rapid stunts. The rapids have been the hardest thing for us to shoot because in England we don’t have the Canadian Rockies so we’ve had to try and recreate that.
“There’s maybe a touch of The Shining in there as well. Generally, though, I do like to keep things original and try not to copy. I want it to be my idea.
“I’ve wanted to create moments where I can make you jump and create tension and fear and adrenaline rushes and then heartache.”
Meanwhile, Emmerdale Producer Kate Brooks has revealed the big stunt week is only the beginning, with the repercussions said to be huge of what goes down.
With talks of a waterfall stunt, dangerous rapids and scenes in a maze, Kate teased the scenes will change lives forever, and change storylines for a long time to come.
Speaking to The Mirror, Kate promised stories would take “unexpected” directions in the fallout to the big week, as spoilers remain under wraps.
She explained: “It is very safe to say that there’ll be a lot of repercussions to come from this week. What happens during this week will really impact the lives of some of our well-loved characters.
“This is just the start of something that will irrecoverably change our characters’ lives forever.”
Kate went on: “We do these weeks and they’re big, exciting, explosive and brilliant, but they fall short if they don’t give us bigger stories afterwards.
“These really catapult the stories into completely different and unexpected directions. You usually find with these weeks that when our writers get given these storylines, they’re very excited and they can’t wait to get started.
“However, some of these big massive stunts can literally be a couple of lines in a stage direction. So it was really, really imperative that we rooted this in character-driven stories.
“We made it about the people involved, as much as about the stunts and visuals. Love, friendship and betrayal are three of the themes that run through the week.
“While some of our characters may get their happy-ever-after, unfortunately, others might not be so lucky…”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
