Ferdinand makes bullish England vs Germany statement ahead of Euro 2020 showdown

Rio Ferdinand has made a forthright prediction as England prepare to take on Germany in a Euro 2020 clash of immense proportions.

Germany recovered from falling behind twice to draw 2-2 with Hungary on Wednesday night and finish second in Group F.

This means they will take on Group D-winners England at Wembley in the last 16 in a match steeped in history.

The Three Lions have never won the Euros, whereas Germany have been crowned continental champions on three occasions – in 1972, 1980 and 1996.

Nonetheless, Ferdinand declares he is “confident” England can progress to the quarter-finals.

Ferdinand is “confident” England will overcome their old rivals at Wembley

“I think we’re just happy for two really good games of football that we saw today,” the former Three Lions defender told BBC Sport after watching the Group F climax, with France and Portugal also in action.

“Knockout football awaits and England now can really focus.

“Listen, we had an eye on the other game as well and after watching that game, I’m quite confident of a good result for England.

“I know we’re getting excited, that’s what we do as England fans.”

Turning his attention to the entertaining 2-2 draw between World Cup-holders France and reigning European champions Portugal, Ferdinand picked out Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba for praise.

He added: “There was some good stuff but I thought both teams lacked rhythm and consistency within their performance.

“In spells in the first half especially, Portugal were the better team in terms of controlling things in the game but each team had moments.

“Pogba was outstanding today. There were some outstanding individual performances today. Him and [Renato] Sanches in midfield were top.”

Despite Ferdinand’s confidence England can overcome Germany on home soil, Die Mannschaft captain Manuel Neuer claims playing at Wembley will “suit” his side.

“We are just relieved that we made it,” said the Bayern Munich goalkeeper after the draw with Hungary. “Of course, it was a nail-biter.

“Against a team like that, it’s naturally difficult when you’re behind. They closed everything down.

“(Hungary shot-stopper) Peter Gulacsi also made a good save. It was a completely different game than against the Portuguese or the French.

“We want to go further – and Wembley suits us.”

Neuer’s optimism about Germany’s trip to north-west London is shared by manager Joachim Low, who said: “It is an absolute highlight to play England at Wembley.

“We will be well prepared and will of course perform differently than today. I can promise that.”

The winner of England and Germany’s last-16 tie will face the victor of Sweden versus Ukraine, which is also scheduled for Tuesday.
