The heart-broken dad of missing Gabby Petito has shared a devastating tribute after police confirmed they had found human remains.
Joseph Petito shared the poignant image on social media of his daughter standing in front of a painted mural with brightly coloured wings on Sunday.
He captioned the photograph with the words ‘she touched the world’ together with an emoji of a broken heart.
The tragic tribute came shortly after the FBI said in a press conference that remains matching Gabby’s description had been found at the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
Authorities said the remains were ‘consistent’ with the missing woman but that a full forensic identification was yet to be completed.
No cause of death has been determined.
Joseph’s social media post has sparked thousands of tributes from well-wishers who have followed the case that has captured the attention of America and across the world.
One said: “Heartbreaking news. I know all of America was rooting for the safe and miraculous return of Gabby Petito.”
Another wrote: “Words cannot describe how the country is now feeling for you and your family Mr Petito.
“Tonight I will turn on the lights on the north facing side of my house, so Gabby’s soul and spirit can always find her way home and back to you. That will be my tribute to Gabby.”
One person said: “We love you and your family even though we’ve never met. We are all holding you and Gabby close to our hearts. She will be deeply mourned by people she never knew.”
North Port police also paid tribute and said on Twitter : “Saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby has been found deceased.
“Our focus from the start, along with the FBI, and national partners, has been to bring her home.
“We will continue to work with the FBI in the search for more answers.”
The 22-year-old first went missing after she left a hotel with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the US, on August 24.
She had been making a social media blog as she travelled around the United States with her fiancé before her disappearance.
Laundrie, 23, returned to their home in North Port, Florida, on September 1 without Gabby, who has not been seen or heard from.
Police named him as a person of interest in her disappearance on Wednesday.
Last week, police in Moab, Utah, released body camera footage of an August 12 encounter two of their officers had with the couple during a traffic stop.
In the video, the woman is seen sobbing as she describes a quarrel with Laundrie that she says became physical at times.
The officers did not detain the couple but insisted they spend that night separately, with her in the van and Laundrie at a hotel.
