Gerrard urged to snub moneybags Newcastle to follow long-term Liverpool goal

Steven Gerrard has been urged by a former team-mate to turn down the Newcastle job – as he’s already the perfect long-term replacement for current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

Steven Gerrard has been urged to resist taking the Newcastle job by his former Liverpool team-mate Peter Crouch.

The pair crossed paths for three years at Anfield during Gerrard’s iconic Reds career before he departed the club back in 2015.

Since leaving Merseyside, Gerrard has tasted managerial success with Scottish giants Rangers.

He helped guide them to the Scottish title last year – ending Celtic ‘s nine-year stranglehold over the Scottish Premier League.

And his impressive work at Ibrox has attracted the attention of Newcastle as their new ownership group look to stamp their mark on the club following their £305million takeover earlier this month.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been heavily linked with Newcastle since their takeover

With Steve Bruce on the brink of dismissal following Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham, Gerrard has been highlighted as the man to lead Newcastle into a bright new era.

But Crouch has warned his pal that taking the Newcastle job could jeopardise his long-term aim of returning to Anfield as Liverpool manager – with the former striker insisting that Gerrard is the natural replacement for current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

“If I’m a Newcastle fan, I’d love somebody like Stevie to come in,” Crouch said in his column for The Daily Mail.

“It is a mouth-watering prospect for any possible new manager. Where can they take Newcastle with significant funding?

“I’m imagining St James’ Park under the lights against Barcelona in the Champions League, but that is potentially a few years down the line. Whether that fits with Stevie’s timeline will be key to his decision if an offer arrives.

“Because let’s not mess about — here is Liverpool’s next manager. He has to be. Jurgen Klopp has that job for as long as he wants it, but he is not going to stay around for ever. At some point, his family might want to move back to Germany. When that happens, Gerrard will be ready.

“That is worth waiting for — the move back home. He could manage his club for 10 years and cement his legend even further, if that is possible. He is on that path where he is, so to take Newcastle would be a huge call.

“I would not bet against him doing another magnificent job in the North East if it happened but the man to take that leap does run the risk of the appointment ending up short-term. Right now, we do not know how the new owners will run the club.

“If I were in his shoes, I would probably give it a swerve. There would be an element of feeling wary about the unknowns, for sure. Other factors are at play as well. The Rangers support would understand his departure for Anfield, whereas it might be a somewhat different conversation with Newcastle.”

Bruce is now on the brink of being dumped after losing his 1000th game as a manager on Sunday.

Should the axe, as expected, fall this week on the beleaguered Toon boss, then speculation will only intensify around Gerrard – who stopped short of ruling himself out of a move earlier this month.

“I think it’s interesting what’s happening at Newcastle,” he said. “I think if anyone deserves a break it’s the Geordie fans.”
