Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar and would be the perfect signing to complete the rebuild at Manchester United.

Phillips has been with Leeds since he was just 14 and is a crucial part of Marcelo Bielsa’s side, helping them achieve promotion from the Championship during the 2019/20 season.

The 25-year-old was named England player of the year following his incredible run with the national team during this summer’s Euro 2020 campaign, and has proved that he is one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders.

United are in pursuit of a defensive-minded midfielder, and Phillips is the perfect candidate to complete Solskjaer’s squad.

Kalvin Phillips is wanted by Manchester United

It was reported by the Daily Star on Monday that United want to sign Phillips from Leeds, and in doing so have ended their interest in West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, who starred alongside the Yorkshire star for England.

The same report claimed that Rice has been on United’s radar for the past 12 months, but they are concerned about West Ham’s £90million valuation, leading Solskjaer to make Phillips his main priority in next summer’s transfer window.

The move would cause uproar amongst the Leeds supporters, who still see United as one of their biggest rivals, but the Red Devils have a history of raiding Leeds for their top stars, as Eric Cantona, Alan Smith and Rio Ferdinand all switched Elland Road for Old Trafford in the past.

Phillips is currently valued at about £60m and is still under contract until 2024, but he is exactly the type of player that Solskjaer’s side need to stabilise the midfield and take United to the next level.

Rice and Phillips are two of the most desired midfielders in the Premier League, both demonstrating similar strengths, but also working exquisitely as a pair due to their subtle differences.

Their performances over the summer boosted their profiles even further, as they became loved across England, and Solskjaer will look to sign Phillips to add to heavy English contingent already at Old Trafford.

United stars such as Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dean Henderson, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood, and now Jadon Sancho are all in and around Gareth Southgate’s set up.

United already signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, leaving just that holding midfield role weakened in an otherwise blockbuster team.

Fred has tried but failed on the multitude of chances that has been given to him, and Scott McTominay has a bright future, but isn’t the finished article just yet.

Paul Pogba has fluctuated between playing in the middle and operating out wide, but there would be no second guessing with Phillips, who would make that position his own.

It will be tough for Phillips to leave his home club, but a move to United is the perfect step-up needed in his career.
