Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah can win this year’s Ballon d’Or – if the award is based on consistency.

The Egyptian forward, 29, has been in sensational form this season, scoring seven goals and producing four assists in eight Premier League appearances.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Klopp said: “I have no idea how you win the Ballon d’Or.

“If it’s about being in the Champions League final and scoring then he doesn’t have much chance this season. If it’s about performances over several years, then he has.”

Salah’s Ballon d’Or hopes could be hampered by Liverpool’s lack of silverware, with the team failing to win a trophy since their 2019-20 Premier League triumph.

But the former Chelsea star’s form since he signed for the Reds in June 2017 has been outstanding, scoring 135 goals in 213 games in all competitions.

Virgil van Dijk, who was speaking alongside Klopp, was also happy to praise Salah’s dazzling form this season.

The Dutch defender added: “He is doing pretty well. He is incredible and has been showing it consistently for the last few years.”

Salah’s existing Liverpool deal expires in June 2023 and reports suggest the player wants £500,000-a-week to stay at Anfield.

Klopp wasn’t interested in discussing Salah’s contract situation, telling the press when asked: “I don’t know, we will see.”

But the Liverpool boss was happy to praise fellow forward Roberto Firmino, 30, after his Premier League hat-trick against Watford on Saturday.

The Brazil international is now just seven goals away from bringing up a century of strikes for Liverpool.

Klopp insisted: “Bobby has been massive for the development of the team, key player and connector of various pieces across the pitch.

“He didn’t have a proper pre-season and then got injured, wasn’t helpful, but three goals at weekend will help him a lot. I’m never shy of putting praise on Bobby.”

Van Dijk, meanwhile, has hailed Sadio Mane after he scored his 100th Premier League goal against Watford, as well as the collective quality of Liverpool’s squad.

The Reds are currently second in the Premier League after an unbeaten start to their domestic campaign, one point behind leaders Chelsea.

Van Dijk claimed: “We have such a great team. If you look at Watford, Sadio scored his 100th Premier League goal – and we should talk about that a little bit more.

“Firmino also scored a hat-trick. We all have a job to do and everyone has their own responsibilities.”

Discussing Liverpool’s prospects against La Liga champions Atletico, Van Dijk added: “We don’t need any extra motivation.

“The Champions League is the most prestigious cup in Europe. We want to go out there and show our qualities. We know how tough it will be.”
