Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane named in AFCON team of the century

Both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have had brilliant starts to the season for Liverpool – though they could miss a month of action for the next AFCON in January

Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been named in the AFCON team of the century.

As the Liverpool attackers continue to enthral Anfield and terrify defenders this season, they have been included in the team along with several other ex-Premier League superstars.

The duo were selected by fans following an online poll that came ahead of the next African Cup of Nations tournament.

The competition was due to take place earlier this year but was forced to be rearranged due to Covid-19.

It will take place in Cameroon and get underway in January in the new year.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba also made the final XI alongside the Liverpool pair.

The Ivorian striker is his nation’s all-time top scorer and was a part of a dominant Chelsea team under Jose Mourinho.

Enigmatic ex-Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure also made the cut.

The midfielder set the Premier League alight for years with the ease in which he would stroll around the pitch.

Samuel Eto’o, arguably one of the best strikers of his time, also made the team, winning fans votes.

Liverpool’s Mane and Salah were named on the wings, either side of Drogba and Eto’o – an objectively terrifying attack had they ever played together.

Salah is far from the only Egyptian present, with five of his countrymen also making the cut, perhaps surprisingly as players like Kolo Toure are absent.

The defence includes Egyptians Ahjmed Fathi, Sayed Moawad, and Wael Gomaa.

Senegalese centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, currently at Napoli, completes the back four with Egypt’s Essam El Hadary in goal.

To complete the side is the sixth Egyptian, midfielder Moham AbouTrika, leaving a number of countries absent from the fan-voted team.

This year’s AFCON will mean Liverpool will be without Salah and Mane in the winter for up to a month, stretching Liverpool’s attack thin.

Midfielder Naby Keita is also set to be involved for Guinea.

Mane’s Senegal have been drawn into Group B against Zimbabwe, Guinea and Malawi.

Meanwhile, Salah and Egypt find themselves in Group D with Nigeria, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.

Both Salah and Mane have made brilliant starts to the season, in a Liverpool team that have at times looked reminiscent of the title-winning side of two years ago.

In eight games, Salah has an impressive eight goals and two assists, whereas Mane is averaging a goal every two games with his tally of four in eight.

Klopp’s Reds remain unbeaten so far, while Salah reached 100 league goals for the club as Mane reached 100 goals in total last month.

The talented attackers have become vital components of Klopp’s side and their absence might be sorely felt.

Both players will be key ahead of this weekend’s tie against Manchester City.

Liverpool come into the game off the back of a 5-1 demolition of Porto and City lost 2-0 to PSG in a game punctuated by a moment of magic from Lionel Messi.
