Madeleine McCann’s mum returns to work on NHS frontline to help fight Covid

Ex-GP Kate McCann has “thrown herself back into a full time job to assist others in need” as the Covid pandemic rumbles on. The mum and husband Gerry have vowed to never stop looking for Madeleine

Kate McCann has returned to work as a doctor 14 years after Madeleine disappeared

Madeleine McCann’s mum has re-joined the NHS frontline to help in the fight against Covid, it has been reported.

Ex-GP Kate McCann is working as a doctor in hospitals in Leicester and is said to be pleased to be “doing her little bit to help” with the city having some of the country’s highest virus figures.

The 53-year-old quit her job after toddler Madeleine disappeared during a family holiday in Praia da Luz on the Algarve in 2007.

The missing child case is yet to be resolved 14 years on, but Kate is said to have “thrown herself back into a full time job to assist others in need”, a family friend claims.

Husband Gerry, a cardiologist in the Midlands city, will at times be working at the same hospital as his wife but the pair are expected to “hardly ever see” each other because they’ll be “both so busy”.

The pal told the Sun: “Kate’s back working as a doctor. She’s helping out at her local hospitals now and not doing any surgery work.

“She has thrown herself back into a full time job to assist others in need.

“There’s such a demand for qualified medics during these unprecedented times.”

Madeleine, three at the time she disappeared, had been left sleeping in a bedroom with her twin siblings while her parents dined at a tapas restaurant down the road.

Kate and Gerry have vowed to never stop looking for their daughter.

It comes as prime suspect in the case, Christian Brueckner, 44, is being investigated over at least five other sex crimes, German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has said.

Mr Wolters said detectives believe “there is a good basis” to suspect the German paedophile also carried out a sex assault on a girl of 10.

The victim was grabbed by a naked man, who performed a sex act.

This was six miles from where Maddie, three, vanished in Praia da Luz a month later in 2007, while on holiday with parents Kate and Gerry.

Mr Wolters said officers are also investigating Brueckner over the killing of 16-year-old Carola Titze in De Haan, Belgium, in 1996, and the rape of a 20-year-old Irish woman in Praia de Rocha, Portugal, in 2004.

And he said his department had been called in by officers probing Brueckner on suspicion of the disappearance of “German Maddie” – five-year-old Inga Gehricke – in 2015, as well as claims he carried out a sex act in front of children in a playground in Messines, 40 miles from Praia da Luz, in 2017.

Mr Wolters speaks in a new book My Search for Madeleine, by British journalist Jon Clarke.
