Mum-of-six Madonna has penned a gushing tribute to middle child David Banda on his 16th birthday

Madonna has shared a heartfelt tribute to her adopted son David Banda on his 16th birthday.

The singer posted a series of photos on Instagram that show David through the ages, from when he was adopted by her and her ex-husband Guy Ritchie aged 13-months-old right until the present day.

The ageless 63-year-old wrote: “David Banda!! I cannot believe you have grown into This Young Man! This Artist. This Athlete. This Articulate and Charismatic Human.

“Who knew when i met you at Home of Hope Orphanage in Malawi, drinking coke out of a baby bottle and wearing no diaper that you would become this force of nature? Happy Sweet Sixteen! I’m so proud of you!”

In the photos she chose to mark his special birthday, David can be seen suited and booted, wearing traditional African clothes, and pulling off some high fashion style poses in bold outfits.

David was the first child that Madonna adopted, after she met him at a Malawi orphanage she partially funds.

The tot was suffering from pneumonia at the time, and she became determined to welcome him in to her home with her daughter Lourdes Leon, and son Rocco Ritchie.

It took two years for the adoption to be formalised, and was steeped in controversy as she hadn’t been an official resident of the African nation for at least a year, which is a legal requirement for adopting a child from there.

In 2019 she told Vogue that she feels a deep connection to David, and thinks that of all her six children, he is the most like her.

She praised David in the caption, but added a little embarrassing detail, too

She said: “What he has more than anything is focus and determination. I’m pretty sure he got it from me. He’s the one I have the most in common with.

“I feel like he gets me; he has more of my DNA than any of my children so far. Let’s see what happens – it’s still early days for everyone.”

David has a real talent for football, and was signed to Benfica’s youth team when he was just 12. To support his budding football career, in 2017 Madonna relocated to Portugal with her four youngest children but they moved back to New York in 2020, just ahead of the coronavirus pandemic.

She said at the time: “I moved to Lisbon to be a soccer mom. I wanted to be a soccer mom. I thought it would be adventurous. But I found myself alone, without friends, a little bit bored.

”I was invited to a fado club. The music is made up of melancholy, sadness and longing — the best description of me.’

Madonna’s biological children Lourdes Leon, 24, and Rocco Ritchie, 21, are also older siblings to three other adopted Malawi orphans, Mercy James, 15, and nine-year-old twins Stelle and Estere Ciccone.
