Detectives investigating the murder of Sabina Nessa have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of murder in what Scotland Yard said was a “significant development”.

Met Police announced the arrest on Sunday morning, just over a week after the primary school teacher was found dead in a south London park.

The force said he was arrested at around 3am in East Sussex.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “Sabina’s family have been informed of this significant development and they continue to be supported by specialist officers.”

Sabina, 28, was killed as she set off to take what should have been a five-minute walk from her Kidbrooke home to meet a friend at a pub.

Her body found under a pile of leaves off a footpath in Cator Park, in the borough of Greenwich.

The death has caused an outpouring of public grief amid concerns for women’s safety.

Her family spoke of their grief at the loss of the beloved young women as a vigil was held in the park where she was found.
