Manchester United’s team of 2008 are thought by some to be one of the best United side’s ever and the team remain close, exchanging WhatsApp messages “every two minutes”
Manchester United’s historic Champions League winning team of 2008 still share WhatsApp messages between each other regularly, Patrice Evra has revealed.
Evra was one of a number of United stars, including club legends Edwin van der Sar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand, who were unstoppable under Sir Alex Ferguson at the time.
The ‘Class of 08’ have been described as the club’s best ever side – having also won the Premier League title in the 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 season.
And despite their huge billing, the stars still share a laugh at each other’s expense every morning.
Speaking at the launch of Prime Video’s winter sports schedule, Evra said: “For many players, when they retire, what we miss the most is the dressing room. All the banter, all the stories. Everything happens inside.
“I spoke with [Edwin] van der Sar when he retired and I said, ‘how are you doing?’ And he said, ‘Patrice I just miss you guys’.”
“We are lucky, the United group we still have a WhatsApp group. We are everyone, so every morning we just laugh off each other. We have still got that.
“It is most of the players from 2008 when we won the Champions League. It is really active. Every two minutes. Rio created it. We just keep connected and have a laugh. It was not just a team, it was like a family.”
In 2008, the Red Devils pipped Chelsea to the Premier League title by two points, in what was Jose Mourinho’s last season in his first stint at Chelsea.
The two clubs also met in the Champions League final in Moscow, the game ended in a 1-1 draw before United won on penalties – with John Terry infamously slipping and missing his spot kick.
United had lost to eventual winners AC Milan in the previous season’s Champions League, and lost in the final the following year to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.
Gary Neville, a key member of the victorious side, described the side as one of the club’s best ever.
He said: “Without that great Barcelona team, I think that this would’ve been the greatest.
“There were eight players, I would say at the time Edwin Van der Sar, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, you could put them in any team in the world, they were world class.
‘I don’t think Manchester United have ever had a team that had so many world-class players, and I look back at all the teams in history.
“Of course, there has been world-class players at Manchester United but to have eight almost nine best in position almost in the world at that time, it was an unbelievable team.”
