Meghan Markle wore $1,690 Carolina Herrera dress with thousands of pounds of jewellery

The Duchess of Sussex sported an eclectic collection of jewellery as she made an appearance at the star-studded Vax Live telecast yesterday.

Meghan Markle, 39, piled on stacks of jewels as she appeared in a pre-recorded message from her $14 million Californian mansion at the concert yesterday in which she claimed COVID has wiped out a generation of progress for women of color.

The Duchess, who is known for her love of expensive designer clothing and symbolic jewellery, opted to wear a red £1,200 Carolina Herrera shirt dress emblazoned with poppies for the occasion.

Meanwhile she paired the look with a stack of gold jewellery, including Princess Diana‘s £17,800 Cartier watch, a £5,000 Cartier bracelet, £2,361 bracelet and a £102 necklace featuring a ‘woman’s power’ charm.

Meghan has long been a fan of Carolina Herrera, having opted to wear the designer several times during her time in the royal family.

On the last day of their royal tour of Morocco, the royal swept into a meeting with King Mohammed VI in a custom version of a £3,222 chiffon gown from Herrera’s AW19 collection.

During her appearance yesterday, she donned the Poppy Print Tie Waist Shirtdress which is described online as a flowery silk shirtdress styled with a tie-cinched waist and flowy A-line midi skirt.

The Duchess of Sussex is a fan of wearing several pieces of jewellery at once, bucking the royal trend for keeping accessories to a minimum.

She paired the dress with £100 ‘Woman Power Charm Necklace’ from jewellery brand Awe Inspired.

The company states on its website: ‘Celebrating intersectional feminism and social justice is at the core of who we are and what we do.

‘20% of all proceeds benefit our incredible charity partners, each chosen for the direct impact they have on the lives of women overcoming adversity.’

Meanwhile she also opted to wear Princess Diana’s gold Cartier Tank watch, which is thought to be a present from Harry.

It was worth $23,000 (£17,800) at the time but is now likely worth a lot more given its history.

The elegant timepiece was worn by Diana at a number of occasions, including a 1997 visit to London’s Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple and an engagement at the British Lung Foundation that same year.

Meghan is known to be a fan of the Tank watch and splurged on her own two-tone version back in 2015 when ‘Suits’ was picked up for a third season.

At the time, she told Hello Magazine, ‘I’ve always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch. When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season—which, at the time, felt like such a milestone—I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version

‘I had it engraved on the back, ‘To M.M. From M.M.’ and I plan to give it to my daughter one day. That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.’

Meghan has been gifted several items from Diana’s collection. They include Diana’s butterfly earrings and gold bracelet which she wore on their Australian tour in 2018.

Yet the watch is a favorite and she has been spotted wearing it often.  The watch had been gifted to Diana by her father on her 21st birthday.

On her wrist, Meghan also wore a Cartier ‘Love’ Bracelet worth $6,500 (£5,031), that she’s had since at least 2017.

This was also thought to be a present from Harry, gifted before the couple were engaged.

The oval Cartier band is made of two C-shaped halves screwed together.

The only way to remove it is with a screwdriver, like the 18-carat one supplied – a feature said to be inspired by medieval chastity belts.

The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson each had earlier versions of the Cartier Love Bracelet as well.

The Duchess also wore on her wrist a Cartier 'Love' Bracelet, which is believed to be worth £5,031

She added the a gold tennis bracelet from Jennifer Meyer for the occasion. The piece is a ‘chic complement to everyday style’ and ‘a true staple.’

During the appearance yesterday, pregnant Meghan said: ‘As campaign chairs of Vax Live, my husband and I believe it’s critical that our recovery prioritizes the health, safety and success of everyone, but particularly women who have been disproportionately affected by this pandemic.’

‘Women, and especially women of color, have seen a generation of economic gain wiped out.’

Cradling her large baby bump in a red floral blouse, Meghan continued: ‘My husband and I are thrilled to soon be welcoming a daughter. It’s a feeling of joy we share with millions of other families around the world.

‘When we think of her, we think of all the young women and girls around the globe who must be given the ability and support to lead us forward.’

The Vax Live concert took place at Los Angeles’ Lo-Fi stadium this past Sunday. Prince Harry appeared in person, but Meghan reportedly pulled out at the last minute.

However, her brief recorded statement aired at the conclusion of the concert’s telecast – which was aired across multiple TV channels in the US on Saturday night.

It was the Duchess’s first appearance on American television since her and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah back in March.
