Nearly half of areas in England see rise in Covid infections – see full list

Nearly half of England’s towns and cities have seen a week-on-week rise in Covid cases as concern mounts over the Indian variant.

Worst hotspots Bolton and Bedford recorded more than double the number of infections in the seven days to last Thursday.

Blackburn, Melton and Burnley also have also witnessed an alarming rise in new cases.

Of 315 local authority areas in England, 150 saw more people testing positive, while 143 saw a fall and 22 were unchanged.

It comes as a further 1,979 new coronavirus cases were confirmed by the Department of Health, bringing the number of people testing positive in the last week to 15,540 – a 1.1 per cent rise compared to the previous seven days.

The UK’s official death toll today rose by five, bringing the tragic figure since the start of the pandemic to 127,684.

Bedford has seen the number of infections double in a week, latest figures show

Latest data reveals 991 people were being treated in hospital across the UK for the virus on Thursday, with 751 admissions in a week.

The figures were released on the day lockdown restrictions were eased further in England – with hospitality venues such as pubs, restaurants and cinemas allowed to serve customers indoors.

People are now allowed to meet indoors in groups of six, while gatherings of up to 30 are permitted outdoors.

And non-essential international travel is permitted for the first time in months.

Earlier today Health Secretary Matt Hancock told MPs there have been 2,323 confirmed cases of the Indian variant across England – with 483 cases in Bolton and Blackburn with Darwin.

That’s an increase of more than 1,000 since Thursday last week – when the UK figure was 1,313.

There are now 86 council areas with five or more confirmed cases of the India variant of the virus, Mr Hancock told the House of Commons.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Bolton (up from 133.9 cases per 100,000 to 282.0)
  • Bedford (61.2 to 123.5)
  • Burnley (20.2 to 56.2)
  • Blackburn with Darwen (84.8 to 117.6)
  • Melton (23.4 to 52.7)

Mr Hancock said that the majority of those admitted to hospital with the Indian variant are of an age which makes them eligible to get the virus, but the patients had not.

The Health Secretary said of the 18 hospitalised patients, five had had a single dose of the jab, one had had a second dose – and 12 had not been vaccinated at all.

He said: “This shows the new variant is not tending to penetrate into older, vaccinated groups and it underlines again the importance of getting the jab especially – but not only – amongst the vulnerable age groups.”
