Lumo is launching a new electric train service between Edinburgh and London with fares from under £15 each way and you’ll be able to travel from October
A new train service between London and Edinburgh is set to launch next month with fares going from just £14.90 each way.
New travel company Lumo is launcing the new 100% electric rail service from October 25, with direct trains between the two cities including calls at Newcastle, Morpeth and Stevenage.
There will be five new Hitachi AT300 intercity electric trains on offer, with features including free Wi-Fi, paperless tickets, an entertainment system and a single seat class.
As part of its eco-friendly mission, over 50% of the on-board menu will be plant-based, while staff uniforms will be responsibly sourced and recyclable.
The company has also said that 60% of all its single fares will be available to buy for £30 or less.
Lumo is aiming to be a competitor to air travel – current research shows that over 74,500 passengers currently fly between Edinburgh and London each month.
Helen Wylde, Managing Director for Lumo, said: “Travelling in the UK should not cost a fortune and it certainly shouldn’t be the planet that pays. Whatever your preferred mode of transport, we are likely to be more affordable and kinder to the planet.
“We believe everyone has the right to travel in style. We are empowering people to make green travel choices that are genuinely affordable without compromising on comfort.”
The service will aim to create over 13 million additional passenger journeys over the next decade, as well as reducing carbon emissions through the use of electric travel.
It’s estimated that it could contribute as much as £250m to the UK economy over 10 years.
You can find out more about the new services and book your tickets on lumo.co.uk.
If you have been thinking of booking a break to either London or Edinburgh, the good news is that there are plenty of ways to keep costs down whichever city you’ve got in mind.
Although London has a reputation for being expensive, you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy the best parts. For example, if you’re thinking of catching a show there are theatre breaks from £99pp up for grabs, while there’s a handy self-guided walking tour for free sightseeing from the London Eye to the Tower of London.
Tempted by the Scottish capital instead? Edinburgh tends to be a popular destination for the festive season thanks to its beautiful Christmas markets – and there are overnight hotel stays from £89 available for two people.
