Scholes details Ronaldo’s training steps which put him on “another level”

Scholes played with Ronaldo during his first six-year spell at Manchester United and has detailed what made him so successful, even eclipsing club legend Eric Cantona

Paul Scholes has detailed the steps Cristiano Ronaldo takes in training which put him on “another level.”

The legendary midfielder-turned-pundit spent six years with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner during his first stint at Manchester United.

Ronaldo re-signed for the Red Devils this summer in a late transfer window homecoming, eight years after Scholes hung up his boots for good.

But the 46-year-old can still fondly remember the Portuguese prodigy’s training methods, having arrived at Old Trafford as a teenager from Sporting Lisbon, doing things “British players hadn’t seen” behind the scenes.

Also donning the No.7 shirt, Ronaldo has been likened to club legend Eric Cantona but Scholes believes the 36-year-old is “on another level” to the enigmatic Frenchman.

He told Premier League Productions : “Eric was very similar but Cristiano was still on another level from that. Eric did go out and practice but he wasn’t so much a gym person.

“Cristiano did all of his practicing before and after training and also made sure he was stronger for the Premier League by going into the gym afterwards,” the ex-United playmaker said.

“I’ve never seen a more professional person.”

Scholes added: “He was out there all day long, practicing those free kicks, his speed, he was sprinting up hills, he had weights on his ankles.

“He was doing everything that the likes of the British players hadn’t seen. That wasn’t it, he was in the gym afterwards, just doing everything to prepare himself.”

The one-club man joked on Instagram following Ronaldo’s return: “Cristiano was never the same player after he left Man Utd. Hopefully he can recapture his form back where he belongs.”

Ronaldo has scored in every game he has played for the Red Devils since coming back, most recently netting in the win at West Ham.

Following the match, he sent his team-mates a message on social media ahead of what is set to be a big season for United.

“Every game in the Premier League is always an amazing fight for the three points,” said the goalscorer. “Today we got to see a glimpse of all the obstacles that we will find on our way, but we have to keep our mind set on our goals.

“Together! Strong! Focused! Let’s go, Devils!”

As ever, Ronaldo is keen to win big at Old Trafford, and told club media following his second debut, on which the serial winner scored twice in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle : “As I told you before, we have huge potential.

“We have fantastic players, a good coach, a good team. We need to build up the mentality to win the Premier League and even the Champions League.

“So I am here to help the team. I think we have the 11 that are playing and those on the bench that can help as well,” he continued. “We have a good team, as I told you, and the spirit is there.”
