A man has admitted shooting dead his mother before cutting her body into bits and putting them into a handmade crate in the garage of her home in Texas, it is reported.

Robert Barnes, 36, confessed to firing multiple times as his 72-year-old mum Lucila Barnes before mutilating the body, stated a Harris County court judge.

The day after the murder his sister allegedly went to the home and Barnes then threatened her with an AK rifle to get her to leave.

Family members said they went to the Barnes’ home in Houston last Wednesday after not hearing from Ms Barnes since the previous day, reported KPRC.

It was on the Thursday that police went round and made the gruesome discovery.

“It also did stand out to me that when her sister went to check on her, he came out with an AK rifle and told them to leave and that he had taken his mother to the airport,” the judge said.

“He tried to tell the officers the same thing but then couldn’t say what airport.”

Family members called the police on Wednesday evening, reported KPRC, and Sgt Jason Brown said that when officers went round the following day Barnes “brandished a firearm outside the residence and was not cooperative with investigators.”

As Barnes did not let police into the house they needed to get a search warrant.

Once inside officers discovered blood and then finally the body of Ms Barnes in the garage.

No motive for the murder has been declared with Barnes charged with murder and tampering of a corpse. He is being held on a $650,000 (£472,000) bail.

Barnes has also confessed to making the crate, where he put his mother’s body, a month beforehand.

He reportedly has a long criminal record dating back to 2003, reported KHOU, when he pleaded guilty to stealing a firearm and the following year he was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

His string of crimes included refusing to pay for a hotel room in the exclusive Hotel ZaZa in Houston’s Museum District in 2019. He was found by officers in a hotel room lying on a bed with a knife.

Barnes was on probation from that crime when he is alleged to have killed his mother.
