Four runners went to post for the feature on day one of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. And it was St Mark’s Basilica who was the winner, from Tarnawa and Poetic Flare
St Mark’s Basilica preserved his unbeaten record for the season as the Irish Champion Stakes lived up to its billing.
Aidan O’Brien’s colt quickened exceptionally well for Ryan Moore to collar the gallant Poetic Flare in the Leopardstown feature.
Tarnawa, racing widest, chased the front two and just managed to get up for second place.
A stewards’ enquiry was called once the race was concluded, after the front two came close together up the centre of the track.
St Mark’s Basilica, the 5-6 favourite, was winning his fourth Group 1 – adding to the Dewhurst, French 2000 Guineas and Derby plus the Coral-Eclipse.
