Johannes and Kai play romantic leads in the sweet Strictly routine

Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe and Kai Widdrington will lead a same-sex love story routine on tomorrow night’s show.

The pros will be performing a routine to open Saturday night’s show, set at an elegant ball.

In a preview clip on It Takes Two, Johannes explains that he plays a dashing young king who, despite being surrounded by friends, is alone with noone to dance with.

Desperate for love, he starts the routine alone, searching for his soulmate through the crowd of dancers.

Midway through the routine, Kai steps in, takes his hand, and sends them twirling around the dancefloor.

In an extra special moment, the rest of the cast will switch mid-routine so they are all performing with a same-sex partner as well.

“This dance is all about love and tolerance,” Johannes declares. “I think it’s powerful. The way we both move around the dance floor is just magical.”

“The moment they start to move together gives me goosebumps that I can’t explain,” adds creative director Jason Gilkison.

“When two people move as one, it’s one of the most beautiful things you can watch.”

Over the past few years, Strictly has been increasing its use of same-sex couplings in order to promote tolerance and acceptance.

In 2020, they allowed the first same-sex coupling to compete on the series, with Olympian Nicola Adams dancing with Katya Jones.

They unfortunately had to drop out of the competition after Katya tested positive for coronavirus, as quarantine restrictions at the time meant they missed too many shows.

This year is the first time an all-male pairing is competing, with Johannes being partnered with Great British Bake Off star and celeb chef, John Whaite.

The routine is all part of the annual Movie Week celebrations, with every couple performing a song inspired by one of their favourite films.

Among the line-up, Robert Webb and Dianne Buswell will perform a track from The Muppets Movie, Loose Women’s Judi Love will channel her inner Matron Mama Morton for a Chicago song, and Tom Fletcher will go full McFly with a jive from Back To The Future.

Unfortunately, not all the couples will make it through to next week’s show, with a second star packing their bags after their dances after another brutal dance-off.

They will join Nina Wadia and Neil Jones, who were the first eliminated contestants in this year’s series.

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday nights on BBC One, with the results show airing on Sundays.
