‘We are all relieved’: Tuchel after Werner ends goal drought

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has spoken about the role of Romelu Lukaku in his side’s attack while also explaining why midfielder Jorginho is deserving of the Ballon d’Or award.

The Blues broke their club record transfer to land striker Lukaku from Inter Milan this summer in a £98.5million deal.

The Belgian has scored four goals in his opening nine appearances for Tuchel’s side but is without a goal in any of his last five club appearances.

His arrival at Stamford Bridge has seen Lukaku instantly establish him as the team’s main central striker and has transformed Tuchel’s side style of attack.

The German boss has now spoken about how he had ‘to improve our formation’ from last season and believes that Lukaku was central to these ambitions.

Tuchel said, in quotes carried by Football Italia : “I’m sorry for the Inter fans, but like everyone, we try to improve our formation.

“We were looking for a very physical striker, a point of reference, a player with a personality who could lift the pressure off the shoulders of the younger players and give us the chance to play faster football.

“Returning to England, where he played as a young man, was important for him. I knew he was an extraordinary person.”

Lukaku was one of five Blues stars who were named in the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist along with Mason Mount, Cesar Azpiliceuta, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

Tuchel also spoke about his central midfielder Jorginho, who is among the favourites to lift this year’s award having played a key role in the Champions League triumph in May before helping to propel Italy to the Euro 2020 title this year.

Jorginho impressed at the base of midfield for club and country throughout the year with his exploits being rewarded with a place on the shortlist and being among the frontrunners for the award.

Despite coming up against attacking superstars such as Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, the deep-lying midfielder is one of the favourites to land the crown.

Tuchel bigged up Jorginho’s chances of winning the award, claiming that it was a “pleasure” to coach such an “intelligent player” who could help control performances.

Tuchel added: “Jorginho deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.

“He’s a very intelligent player and it’s a pleasure to be his coach.

“He has a great vision of football. For me, individual prizes don’t have great significance, it’s impossible to make a real comparison between several players of different roles.

“I would like one of my players to win it because I would know what the effect would be. Then Jorginho is a great person and an excellent player, but in general it’s not the most important thing.”
