Three young men killed in horror M8 motorway crash as man, 35, arrested

The first pictures of three young men killed in a horror motorway crash have emerged as a man was arrested.

The victims, named locally as David Paton, 27, Manveer Benning, 27, and Mark Downie, 31, died following the tragic incident on the M8 on Sunday.

They were all pronounced dead at the scene at junction 31 westbound, near Bishopton, Renfrewshire, after emergency crews rushed to their aid at around 5am yesterday.

Four other people were rushed to hospital where they were treated for serious injuries, with a blue Audi Q7 having left the road, reports the Daily Record.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences, Police Scotland has confirmed.

Greenock and the wider community is said to have been “rocked” by the tragedy as tributes poured in online for the group of pals.

One person said: “RIP boys and deepest condolences to the families. This has rocked Greenock and the wider community.”

Another added: “Heart is broken thinking of all the family’s.”

While one wrote: “Heart breaks for all of use family and friends. Beautiful boys. RIP.”

Someone else added: “So sad, every mothers worst nightmare getting a call or visit like that in the middle of the night.

“May they rest in peace and lets hope the 5 injured recover well and aren’t too badly affected.



Four other people were rushed to hospital




“Thoughts also to the emergency crews having to deal with this tragedy. Its just horrific.”

One said: “So, so sad. Thoughts are with their heartbroken families.”

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing and investigators are still urging anyone with information to get in touch.







A force statement said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences following a crash on the M8 at junction 31 westbound around 5.05am on Sunday, 19 September, 2021.

“Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 0860 of 19/09/21.”
