Top 10 Covid hotspots with cases in schoolchildren tripling in northern town

A huge spike in coronavirus cases in Bolton has been driven by an outbreak at schools.

The number of positive tests being returned by under-14s in the Greater Manchester town has tripled in a week.

Bolton’s infection rate is now the worst in the country, having doubled over the last week, Manchester Evening News reported.

It is now at 192.3 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 13, figures released by Public Health England revealed.

There have also been large increases among younger adults, who might have been exposed to the virus through their school age children.

The data shows that there has so far been no increase in infections among the over 60s, who are the most vulnerable to serious illness caused by Covid-19.

The case rate has not risen in older groups

In the space of a couple of weeks, the number of cases has gone from around 20 a day to more than five times that now.

The sudden surge means that Bolton neighbourhoods account for six out of the 10 regions nationally with the highest infection rates.

Several other areas have seen big spikes in the number of cases detected over the past week.

Erewash (up from 65.0 to 181.2), Blackburn with Darwen (54.1 to 107.6), Bedford (39.8 to 86.0) and Melton (9.8 to 48.8) all saw significant jumps.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 159 (50%) have seen a rise in rates, 140 (44%) have seen a fall and 16 are unchanged.
